AKRON
Talks for adult adoptees
AKRON: The Special Collections Division at the main branch of the Akron-Summit County Public Library will present two experts to address genealogy research of adopted children from 1 to 4:45 p.m. Saturday at 60 S. High St.
From 1 to 2:45 p.m., Betsie Norris will present “Adoptee Access to Records — Ohio’s New Law.” Norris founded Adoption Network Cleveland in 1988. Her efforts contributed to Ohio becoming the 12th state to open birth records to adult adoptees, allowing 400,000 people adopted in Ohio’s formerly “closed” period, which ranged from 1964 to 1996, to have access to their original birth certificates.
An adoptee who reunited with her birth parents herself, Norris will show a documentary about her story called An Adoptee ROARed in Ohio: The Betsie Norris Story.
From 3 to 4:45 p.m., Amanda Reno will discuss “Solving for Unknown Parentage — DNA Basics,” focusing on delivering the core knowledge required to identify an unknown parent using genealogical DNA testing and traditional research methods.
Reno is an independent genetic genealogist who reunited with her sister after they were separated by adoption for nearly 30 years.
To register for either or both sessions, call 330-643-9030 or email speccollections@akronlibrary.org.
