WADSWORTH
Wrong city on lockdown
WADSWORTH: A lockdown at Wadsworth schools on Friday resulted from a concerned resident who contacted the wrong city’s police department.
Wadsworth Police received a call shortly after 9:30 a.m. Friday from a woman later determined to be from Wellsville — a community more than 80 miles away in Columbiana County, near the Ohio-Pennsylvania border.
The caller told police her cellphone had alerted her that there was an intruder inside Wadsworth High School. Police and school officials responded by placing the school district in lockdown as a precaution while they completed a search.
When no intruder and no threat to safety was located, police investigated more.
They discovered the caller was from Wellsville, where a mock intruder drill had been conducted Friday morning at the local high school.
Parents in the district were alerted shortly after 9:30 a.m. that all buildings in the district had been placed on lockdown. They received a subsequent “all clear” alert about 11 a.m., Wadsworth Superintendent Andrew Hill said.
Police say the caller didn’t intend to panic the district. No charges were filed.
