Syrians hailed as heroes
Three Syrians who overwhelmed a fugitive wanted in an alleged Islamic extremist bomb plot and handed him over to police were hailed as heroes Tuesday, helping temper anti-migrant sentiment fueled in part by fears of such attacks. Jaber Albakr, 22, was tied up and held by three fellow Syrians who alerted police in the eastern city of Leipzig in Saxony. He was arrested early Monday — nearly two days after he evaded officers during a raid on an apartment about 50 miles away where police found explosives.

Deadly attack at shrine
At least 14 people were killed in a militant attack on a Shiite shrine in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Tuesday, an official said. Another 26 people were wounded in the attack on Sakhi Shrine in the city’s western suburbs, the largest such shrine in Kabul, Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said. The dead included 13 civilians and one policeman, while three police officers were wounded, according to Sediqqi. The gunman, Sediqqi said, was shot dead by police.
ENGLAND
Sanders backs brother
Former U.S. presidential candidate Bernie Sanders says that he doesn’t know “a heck of a lot” about British politics, but that hasn’t stopped him from endorsing his brother’s bid for a seat in Parliament. He said Tuesday that Larry Sanders is a “very, very caring human being who wants to see government represent all of the people, not just the people on top.” Larry Sanders, 82, is running as a Green Party candidate in the Oct. 20 vote to fill the seat recently vacated by former Prime Minister David Cameron.
No clowning in London
Police have arrested a person in a clown costume accused of deliberately frightening people on London streets. Police said Tuesday they had arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of a public order offense stemming from an incident that started Saturday night and ended early Sunday. Scotland Yard says there have been a few reports of suspicious clown incidents in London — apparently inspired by clown-related cases in the U.S.
