LOS ANGELES

Three killed in gunbattle

A gunbattle at a Los Angeles restaurant left three people dead and 12 others wounded early Saturday, prompting a massive police dragnet for suspects. “It’s a bloody scene with shell casings everywhere,” Los Angeles Police Sgt. Frank Preciado said. There were about 50 people inside the restaurant, located in a residential neighborhood, when an argument broke out, he said. Three men left the restaurant, returned with firearms and began shooting, according to police. Others at the restaurant also opened fire, and some diners were caught in the crossfire, Preciado said.

7-year-old drives car in video

A Florida mother has been charged with child neglect after instructing her 7-year-old son to drive her car on a public street through their neighborhood in suburban Orlando while she filmed him. The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office said 34-year-old Kwaniqua Glenn was arrested Thursday. Sheriff’s office investigators say Glenn told her son to get behind the wheel and then filmed him from the passenger seat as he drove about a third of a mile at an average speed of 28 mph. The sheriff’s office said she posted the video on social media where a school resource deputy saw it.

Car cut in half; everyone lives

A speeding drunken driver smashed into another car on Long Island in New York and split it in half, police said Saturday. Miraculously, nobody suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash Friday night. Police said Dustin Brandon, 27, was driving a Mercedes-Benz convertible when he collided with a Mazda Miata. The impact caused the Mercedes to overturn and the back of the Mazda was sheared off. Brandon was arrested on charges of DWI and other crimes.

CLERMONT, KY.

Jim Beam workers strike

Instead of producing whiskey, union members are manning picket lines at two Jim Beam distilleries in Kentucky where workers have gone on strike against the world’s largest bourbon producer. More than 200 workers walked off their jobs after rejecting the latest contract offer Friday. As passing motorists honked in support Saturday, striking workers outside the Clermont distillery vented their frustrations. They said staffing shortages often extend workweeks to 60 to 80 hours. The company has turned increasingly to temporary workers, they said, and disregards seniority when assigning veteran employees to new roles or shifts.
