Duck! ‘The Birds’ back in theater

Shock and gore may be all the rage on film, but there’s something to be said for a good old-fashioned Hitchcock scare. The Canton Palace Theatre will show The Birds at 7:30 p.m. as part of its annual Scream Fest, and we dare you not to squirm when the crows start to gather en masse on the jungle gym. Tickets are $5; see www.cantonpalacetheatre.org for tickets or a Scream Fest schedule.

Get into character at fundraisers

Give your Halloween costume a test run before next weekend and help some worthy causes:

• The Art After Dark Costume Party runs from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the Massillon Museum, 121 Lincoln Ave. E., Massillon. It will feature a dance floor, street magician, stargazing, snacks and tarot readings. All proceeds will benefit the Massillon Museum and Canton Museum of Art. $20 (18 and over only) at www.massillonmuseum.org/party.

• The Community Chills & Thrills “Fun” Raiser from 7 to 11 p.m. at Glenmoor Country Club in Canton benefits the Stark County Humane Society. La Flavour will play and there will be a zombie walk, photo booth, costumes, raffles, creepy cocktails and optional Children’s Party. Tickets are $75. Call Ruthanne Wilkof at 330-324-0573.

Fight hunger at Soup for the City

Or you can do some good without having to put on a mask; just show up and sip some soups from local restaurants at Soup for the City, the annual benefit for the Good Samaritan Hunger Center. It runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Greek Community Center at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 129 S. Union St., next to the University of Akron campus. Tickets are $50; www.goodsamaritanhungercenter.org.

Let Pokemon lure you to Kent

Downtown Kent is a hotbed for Pokémon Go players. Main Street Kent will make it even busier by hosting a Lure Party from noon to 4 p.m., with special offers at nearly two dozen downtown businesses. See www.mainstreetkent.org for details.

Watch Mozart’s famed opera

The Met’s popular Live in HD cinema series presents Mozart’s Don Giovanni at 12:55 p.m. at Montrose 12, Akron; Hudson Cinema 10; Cinemark 15, Macedonia; Cinemark Portage Crossing, Cuyahoga Falls; and Cinemark Valley View 24. www.fathomevents.com.
