Wildfire jumps across line
A blaze raging through dry vegetation in Northern California jumped a containment line, setting several houses on fire and prompting firefighters and volunteers to evacuate horses, goats and other animals as homes burned around them. Fire officials said evacuations were ordered in the Copsey Creek subdivision, north of Morgan Valley Road, Sunday afternoon. Houses were burning on both sides of Morgan Valley Road and propane tanks were exploding, making a hissing noise and spewing balls of fire. Firefighters and volunteers were carrying two goats at a time and taking them out of the area where tractors and utility poles were burning and bumpers were melting off cars as heavy smoke darkened the sky.

‘Suicide Squad’ still at top
The colorful crew of Suicide Squad got duller in their second weekend in theaters, with audiences hungry for the raunchy fare of animated Sausage Party. Warner Bros.’ intensely scrutinized comic book film broke records last weekend and managed to stay atop the box office with $43.8 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. But its earnings dropped a steep 67 percent from last weekend. Sony’s raunchy R-rated comedy Sausage Party, co-written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, debuted in second place with $33.6 million, outpacing its reported production budget of $19 million.

2 bodies found under house
Two children were found dead under a neighbor’s house Sunday after their mother matter-of-factly told someone helping her move that she had drowned them in a bathtub, authorities said. The 30-year-old mother was in custody and not yet charged but “all indications are she is the one who acted alone” in the deaths of her 7-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter, Houston police spokesman Kese Smith said. Authorities said the woman told an acquaintance she had drowned the children. The mother apparently tried burying the children at first but put them under the house when that proved too difficult, Smith said.

Six die in airplane crash
Authorities said six people died in the crash of a small airplane near Tuscaloosa. Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox and Northport Mayor Bobby Herndon told a news conference that a pilot issued a distress signal around 11:10 a.m. Sunday, and the aircraft crashed while attempting to land. Authorities said all six people on board were killed. A statement from the Federal Aviation Administration said the Piper PA-31 departed from Kissimmee Gateway Airport in Florida. WLBT-TV reports that Memphis attorney Steve Farese said his nephew Dr. Jason Farese and his wife, Dr. Lea Farese, were aboard the plane. Both were dentists in Oxford, Miss.
