AKRON

Ward 8 meeting

AKRON: City Councilwoman Marilyn Keith will host her Ward 8 monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Northwest Family Recreation Center, 1730 Shatto Ave.

City school board member Patrick Bravo will attend and talk about district plans.

Ward 6 meeting

AKRON: City Councilman Bob Hoch will host his monthly Ward 6 meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Ellet Community Center, 2449 Wedgewood Drive.

The meeting will include presentations by District Fire Chief Joe Natko and Bill Fritz of the Ellet Historical Society.

Metro Parks auction

AKRON: Summit Metro Parks will auction used but well-maintained items including vehicles, power tools, appliances, office equipment and more beginning 4:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Sand Run Metro Park service center.

The center is at 2000 Riverview Road in Akron.

Public viewing of the items will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 23 and Aug. 24.

A complete list of items will be available in advance on the auctioneer’s website: farnsworthauctions.com.

Event at Forest Lodge Park

AKRON: The city and Councilman Russ Neal will host a concert and “Movie in the Park” Friday at Forest Lodge Park, 260 Greenlawn Ave.

The free concert, featuring the NEO Jazz Orchestra, runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The film Minions will be shown at 9 p.m.

The showing also is free and open to the public.

MEDINA

Heroin awareness rally

MEDINA: A heroin awareness rally is scheduled for Aug. 31 in Medina’s Public Square.

The event will take place 5 to 8 p.m.

The list of scheduled speakers at the rally includes representatives from police departments, politicians, addiction recovery centers, nonprofit organizations and recovering addicts.

The event coincides with International Overdose Awareness Day.

The message of the rally is that overdose deaths are preventable.

STARK COUNTY

Woman killed in crash

PARIS TWP.: The Canton post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident Friday in Paris Township in Stark County.

Dead is Rochelle L. Lucas, 46, of Minerva. She was westbound at 4:42 p.m. in a midsize sedan on U.S. Route 30 when she attempted to make a U-turn and was struck in the driver’s side door by a westbound truck driven by Andy S. Denayer, 35, of Canton, according to a report from the patrol.

Lucas was transported by Minerva City EMS to Aultman Hospital in Canton, where she died.

Her daughter, Reed A. Lucas, 21, a passenger in the vehicle, was also taken to Aultman, where she was in stable condition, the patrol said.

On her Facebook page, Reed Lucas said she had a concussion and described her mother as a “guardian angel.”

Denayer, the other driver, refused treatment at the scene.

SUMMIT COUNTY

GOP candidate meeting

AKRON: The Summit County Republican Executive Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Tangier, 532 W. Market St., to select a candidate to run this fall for a new at-large vacancy on Summit County Council.

Democrats last week appointed Councilwoman Ilene Shapiro as county executive following the death of Russ Pry.

Both parties must choose a candidate to run in the general election to fill the remaining two years of Shapiro’s four-year council term.

Democrats also plan to choose their candidate Wednesday.
