AKRON

Kiwanis luncheon

AKRON: Kamelia Fisher, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Summit, Medina & Stark Counties, will speak at the luncheon meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Akron Thursday at the Duck Club of Canal Park, 300 South Main St.

Prior to leading the local agency, Fisher spent five years as president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Central Ohio.

Three robbers sought

AKRON: Akron police are looking for three suspects who robbed a 30-year-old male while he was walking home Thursday.

The victim was walking home from the Highland Square area around midnight when three males approached him, police said on Monday.

One pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded his money and cellphone, which he handed over.

The suspects fled, and the victim went home and reported the robbery the next morning, according to Akron police.

Police said the suspects are three black males ranging from 16 to 20 years old, about 5-foot-7 and 120 pounds. The suspect with a gun was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, gray T-shirt and black pants, while the other two were wearing dark clothing.

College of WOOSTER

Holiday jazz performance

WOOSTER: The College of Wooster’s Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combos will perform at 8:15 p.m. Friday in Freedlander Theatre, 329 E. University St.).

The featured guest soloist is saxophonist Scott Burns, who has performed with Chicago jazz greats. He has also performed in jazz and blues festivals nationally and internationally.

Friday’s program features selections from Duke Ellington’s Jazz Nutcracker Suite, including Peanut Brittle Brigade, Sugar Rum Cherry and Toot Toot Tootie Toot.

Tickets are $10 and are available at Buehler’s Milltown and Towne Market, Lowry Center Wilson Bookstore and the Wooster Book Co.

Students will be admitted for free.

KENT

Traveling stanzas

KENT: The city has joined forces with Wick Poetry Center at Kent State University and Main Street Kent to bring “Traveling Stanzas” to downtown utility boxes.

Visitors will see seven utility boxes covered with poems written by local schoolchildren and adults, and paired with illustrations.

By pushing an easily accessible audio button, visitors can also listen to the child or adult read his or her poem.

Online users can also visit http://publicstanzas.com to virtually visit Traveling Stanzas displays around the world.

The project also received support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Ohio Arts Council, The Burbick Foundation, The Woodward Foundation, Carol W. Gould and Kent State University’s College of Communication and Information.

NORTH CANTON

Peace officer training

NORTH CANTON: Stark State College’s next peace officer basic training academy will begin Jan. 17.

The deadline to apply is Friday.

The academy classes will run 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, as well as Saturdays and most Sundays until May 14.

The academy meets Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy requirements and qualifies successful graduates to take the peace officer state certification test.
