AKRON

Dad sentenced in burn case

AKRON: A Summit County jury found an 18-year-old Akron man guilty of burning his 4-month-old daughter.

The jury found Demetrius Ford guilty of felonious assault and two counts of child endangering, both second-degree felonies. He will be sentenced at 9 a.m. Dec. 27 in Summit County Common Pleas Court.

Prosecutors say Ford, who was 17 at the time, was giving his daughter a bath in February when she suffered second- and third-degree burns to her face, shoulders and chest.

At trial, a child abuse expert testified that the girl was purposefully submerged in scalding water. Investigators also discovered the girl suffered a skull fracture and broken ribs, according to the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office.

Ford was bound over from Summit County Juvenile Court to be tried as an adult.

Chavelle Grier, the child’s mother, was sentenced to probation in June for her part in the girl’s injuries. Grier, 21, pleaded guilty to two counts of child endangering.

CUYAHOGA FALLS

Historic chapel open house

CUYAHOGA FALLS: An open house at the 1898 historic chapel at Oakwood Cemetery will spotlight its stained-glass windows, including the newly restored Rebekah Elm window.

Local historian Mary McClure will give a presentation at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The event is sponsored by the Ladies Cemetery Association of Cuyahoga Falls, which spent two years raising the $7,700 needed to preserve one delicate, 10-feet-by-3-feet, century-old piece of art, which portrays a dove with an olive branch, the moon and stars and a golden beehive.

The association hopes to eventually restore the chapel’s other 11 colorful windows, which are bowing as the original leadwork ages.

There will also be refreshments and Christmas music. The cemetery is at 2420 Oakwood Drive.
