Germany

Stolen Nazi sign likely found

German police say the wrought iron gate to the Nazis’ Dachau concentration camp that was stolen two years ago appears to have been found in western Norway. Bavarian police said Friday the gate, bearing the slogan “Arbeit macht frei,” or “Work sets you free,” was located in the Bergen area after authorities received an anonymous tip. They’re trying to determine if it’s authentic, but say there’s a “high probability it is the iron gate stolen in Dachau.” Dachau, near Munich, was established by the Nazis in 1933. The missing gate, measuring 75 by 37 inches, originally was set into a larger gate at the camp’s entrance. More than 200,000 people from across Europe were held at Dachau, while over 40,000 prisoners died there.

Gambia

President concedes defeat

Gambia’s president of 22 years acknowledged his election defeat on state television Friday night, vowing to step down hours after news of the results prompted thousands to celebrate in the streets in an unprecedented display of disdain for his rule. With cameras rolling, Yahya Jammeh called the winner, opposition coalition leader Adama Barrow, on a mobile phone to praise the election and vow not to contest the result. Jammeh, a man long accused of heading a government that tortures opponents and silences all dissent, promised to help Barrow through the transition period before retiring to his home village to begin a new life as a farmer.

China

21 trapped miners dead

Twenty-one miners who were trapped for four days after an explosion hit their unlicensed coal mine have been confirmed dead, and four people have been arrested in connection with the disaster, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Saturday. Among the four suspects are the mine owner and three managers, the emergency rescue headquarters said in a statement carried by Xinhua. One miner is missing in the city of Qitaihe in Heilongjiang province in northeast China, and the rest of the bodies were retrieved on Friday night, Xinhua said.

France

6 safe after robbery attempt

Paris officials say six people have been found safe inside a travel agency after a failed armed robbery in the southern district of the French capital. Jerome Coumet, mayor for Paris’ southern 13th district, said a single gunman burst into the travel agency on Friday night, but that the owner managed to escape and alert the police. The mayor says nobody was taken hostage during the encounter. The Paris police department says no one was harmed and that a suspect remains at large.
