AKRON

Services set for fire victims

AKRON: Funeral services are schedule for two adults and two girls killed in a North Hill fire last weekend at an East Tallmadge Avenue home.

Visiting hours for Omar Riley, Shirley Wallis and daughters Aniyla Riley, 9, and Shanice Riley, 8, will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Celebration Church, 688 Dan St. A service will follow at the church.

The three-story house where the family of five lived with a friend caught fire Dec. 3. A 12-year-old girl was revived and the other woman escaped by jumping from an attic window.

Akron man killed in crash

COPLEY TWP.: A North Akron man was killed early Saturday when the vehicle he was driving struck a utility pole in Copley Township, police say.

Darrelle Fischer, 32, of Pine Knolls Drive, was ejected after the 2002 Pontiac Montana he was driving veered off South Cleveland-Massillon Road just north of Sunnyfield Drive about 12:30 a.m., according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fischer’s passenger, Shaquilla K. Thomas, 22, of Akron, was taken to a hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, troopers said. Driver impairment was suspected in the crash, the patrol reported.

FAIRLAWN: Summit Mall shoppers can bring their furry family members into the mall for photos with Santa Claus from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Treats will be available for Santa’s canine customers.

NORTON

Officer hurt in traffic stop

NORTON: A Norton police officer was injured early Saturday when a driver hit the car he was sitting in during a traffic stop on Interstate 76, police said.

The incident occurred about 4 a.m. east of Medina Line Road, police said.

What may have caused the driver to hit the police cruiser is unclear. Neither the name of the officer involved nor that of the driver was released.

Both the officer and the driver had minor injuries, police said.

John Glenn viewing is Friday

COLUMBUS: Members of the public will be given eight hours Friday to pay their respects to John Glenn as the late astronaut-hero lies in state at Ohio’s Capitol building.

A spokesman said Saturday that Glenn would lie in repose in the Statehouse Rotunda from noon to 8 p.m. under a proposal set for final approval by the building’s advisory board Monday.

Hank Wilson of the John Glenn College of Public Affairs at Ohio State University said a public memorial service at Mershon Auditorium has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Dec. 17. Tickets are required.

WADSWORTH

Council OKs city pay raises

WADSWORTH: The City Council on Tuesday approved pay increases for city employees, municipal court employees, the council clerk and the city auditor.

The salary schedule, which covers city employees who are not union members or elected officials, will increase by 2 percent in 2017. The schedule ranges from $25,407 for entry-level clerical positions to $133,639 for top-level professional positions. The auditor’s salary for 2017 will be $78,000, and the council clerk’s will be $1,588.74 biweekly.

In addition, the council set public hearings for its sessions on Jan. 17 and Feb. 7; both will be at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 120 Maple St. Plans to revitalize the city’s downtown and revisions to regulations concerning oil and gas wells will be discussed at the Jan. 17 hearing.

Discussion of new regulations for planned unit developments will be the topic for the Feb. 7 hearing.

Service Director Robert Patrick told the council that plans call for more leaf pickup this year and that residents must have the leaves raked to the curb.
