LAS VEGAS

Prison for attempt on Trump

A British man diagnosed with mental illness was sentenced Tuesday to about four more months in a U.S. prison for trying to grab a police officer’s gun in a plan to kill presidential candidate Donald Trump at a June campaign rally in Las Vegas. Michael Steven Sandford, 20, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge James Mahan to one year and one day in prison with credit for time served and good behavior. The sentence was six months less than prosecutors sought, but the judge said Sandford will be deported once released. Mahan blamed the June 18 attempt in a crowded casino ballroom on Sandford’s mental illness, calling it a “goofy, crazy stunt” fueled by voices he thought he was hearing.

NEW YORK CITY

Armed man at Trump Tower

Police said they arrested a man who showed up at the Trump Tower security checkpoint with a knife, handcuffs, fireworks and a water pistol. Authorities said 19-year-old Alexander Wang of Poughquag, N.Y., was arrested at around 6:30 p.m. Monday. The Manhattan district attorney’s office said Tuesday afternoon that he was awaiting arraignment. The Secret Service runs the checkpoint. The NYPD has a security detail at the tower.

Police kill man near campus

A police officer at Coppin State University shot and killed a man who had just fired at a moving car near the campus Tuesday evening, authorities said. The suspected shooter was pronounced dead on the scene and the officer wasn’t hurt, Baltimore police spokesman T.J. Smith said at a news conference. There were no reports of any injuries. Earlier Tuesday evening, a man killed in a double shooting became Baltimore’s 300th homicide this year, Smith said.

VISALIA, Calif.

Man, one of wives arrested

Authorities said that a central California man who was married to two women at the same time has been arrested on suspicion of murdering one of them, and his other wife also has been arrested. The Sacramento Bee reports the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday it has arrested Francisco Valdivia, 37, and Rosalina Lopez, 39, both of the Visalia area. Sheriff Mike Boudreaux said Valdivia’s other wife, 30-year-old Cecilia Bravo, went missing June 9 and was last seen at the Tachi Palace Casino. She is believed to be a victim of homicide. Her body has not been found. Boudreaux said Valdivia married Bravo to gain legal residence.
