St. Sebastian Parish School seventh-grade students recently took first place in a video contest sponsored by the Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program as part of their National Energy Awareness Month Video Contest.
The students’ first task was to research petroleum products. Then they produced videos highlighting how everyday tasks and events are accomplished using petroleum-based products. The award money will be used to support additional programs in the school’s science lab.
St. Hilary School fourth-graders donated cold weather gear including coats, sweatshirts, hats, gloves, socks and other items to help those in need. The items were distributed as gifts to the hundreds of individuals who enjoyed Christmas Eve dinner at the St. Bernard’s Hunger Center.
The Kent State University Police Department was recently reaccredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. The recognition comes after a comprehensive review of the agency and marks the eighth time the department has received the accreditation award. For the fifth time, the department also received the designation of Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation with Excellence. The designation is given to select agencies to recognize their effective use of accreditation as a model for the delivery of enhanced public safety services and management professionalism. Kent State police also received Meritorious Award honors for being an accredited agency for more than 15 years.
Summit Metro Parks is recognizing staff who reached service milestones in the fourth quarter of 2016. 30 Years: Steve Bock (Rittman), crew leader; 25 Years: Scott Guay (Doylestown), park manager II; 15 Years: Eric Fitch (Massillon), project manager and Terri Joe Levers (Barberton), park technician I; 10 Years: Steven Johnson (Mogadore), crew leader, and Ryan Boyes (Akron), maintenance/utility worker. The park district has 155 full-time and part-time employees who together manage more than 14,000 acres and 125 miles of trails, and offer dozens of programs every month.
Several Akron-area residents have received scholarships for the 2016-2017 academic year from Lourdes University in Sylvania. Local recipients include: middle school education major Taylor L. Geib of Ravenna, criminal justice major Payton S. Hulsinger of Sagamore Hills Township and criminal justice major Marilynne N. Tressel of Stow.
