Go into the Playhouse for ‘Into the Woods’

“I wish … more than anything …” that I had tickets to the innovative take on the Stephen Sondheim-James Lapine musical Into the Woods that opens at 7:30 p.m. at the Connor Palace in Cleveland’s Playhouse Square. Unlike the big-budget movie version you may have seen, this production is stripped-down and elemental, and it’s one of the most accessible Sondheim shows for neophytes. It runs through Jan. 29 and tickets are $10-$90 at 216-241-6000, www.playhousesquare.org.

Get the dish on ‘Millionaires’ and ‘Sins’

Catch a couple of author presentations at local libraries:

• Kelly C. Brown, H. Craig Erskine III, L.W. Koehler and G. Thomas read from and sign their collection Seven Deadly Sins: Simply Delectable Stories, a collection of stories and recipes, at 6 p.m. at the Tallmadge branch of the Akron-Summit County Public Library, 90 Community Road.

• The Highland branch of the Medina County Public Library, 4160 Ridge Road, hosts Dan Ruminski, author (with Alan Dutka) of Cleveland in the Gilded Age: A Stroll Down Millionaires’ Row, at 6:30 p.m.

Cool hike on how birds deal with cold

It’s hard to believe that tiny birds survive the kind of frigid temperatures we’ve had lately. Find out more about birds in winter at an 11 a.m. hike at Firestone Metro Park, Tuscarawas Meadows Area, 2620 Harrington Road, Akron. You might even get one to eat out of your hand. 330-865-8065.
