Police say an Akron family awoke Saturday morning to the sounds of someone banging on their front and back doors.
The family, who lives in the 400 block of Delmar Avenue, called 911 when a man broke into their back door, armed with a hammer, and attacked a male resident. The family fled upstairs to a bedroom and locked the door and attempted to barricade it from the inside, according to the Akron Police Department.
The intruder forced the bedroom door open and the family climbed out of the bedroom window onto the roof. The male resident fell off the roof, injuring his leg. The suspect ran out of the house and chased the male resident around the neighborhood, hitting him with the hammer and his fist, according to police.
Several neighbors saw what was happening and came out of their houses to help. They got the hammer away from the suspect.
The resident was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries.
Police charged Kristopher L. Malcolm, 26, of Marview Avenue in Akron, with felonious assault and aggravated burglary.
Lt. Rick Edwards, the police spokesman, said Monday that the suspect didn’t know the family. Police think he was high on drugs.
