ST. PAUL, MINN.

Amber Alert child found dead

Authorities found the body of a 5-year-old Minnesota girl Saturday just hours after they had issued an Amber Alert saying she had been abducted by a family friend. The body of Alayna Jeanne Ertl was found in Cass County, about 200 miles north of Minneapolis. The suspect in her disappearance, family friend Zachary Anderson, 26, has been arrested and a vehicle found, police say. They say Anderson was staying overnight at the girl’s home. The girl’s mother discovered them gone at 8 a.m. No other details were immediately available.

NEWARK, N.J.

Killings mar anti-violence rally

For the second straight year, an annual anti-violence event in New Jersey’s largest city has been marred by deadly shootings. Two men were killed and a woman seriously wounded in separate shootings that occurred around the same time late Friday night in Newark, prosecutors in Essex County said. However, it does not appear that the incidents are connected. The shootings came just hours after city officials launched the fifth annual “24 Hours of Peace” celebration. It features several community events aimed at bringing people together and curbing violence in the city. Motives for both shootings remain under investigation, and no arrests have been made.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.

Twister tears through area

A storm that appeared to spawn at least one tornado slammed parts of western Michigan on Saturday, causing extensive damage but no injuries or loss of life, authorities said. State Police spokesman Dale Hinz said damage from the storm stretched up to 20 miles from just south of Bangor to the small community of Grand Junction, about 60 miles southwest of Grand Rapids. A number of homes had their roofs ripped off, trees were uprooted and vehicles damaged. But there were no reports of injuries or fatalities, Hinz said.

RIMERSBURG, PA.

Boat overturns, killing three

Authorities say three men died and another was injured after a boat overturned on the Allegheny River. Officials in Clarion County, Pa., said the 21-foot boat apparently ran up on the riverbank and overturned at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday. Emergency officials were called at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday when someone reported a boat upside down in the river. Waterways conservation officer Gregory Pochron, of the Fish and Boat Commission, said three men were found dead in the boat. A man in his 70s found pinned underneath the boat was reported to be conscious and alert when he was taken to a hospital in Pittsburgh.
