AKRON

Ward 6 meeting

AKRON: The Ward 6 monthly meeting will be held Thursday at the Ellet Community Center, 2449 Wedgewood Dr., from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Akron fire Chief Clarence Tucker and police Capt. Brian Simcox are scheduled to address residents.

FAIRLAWN

Prostate cancer meeting

FAIRLAWN: The Prostate Cancer Support and Education Group will have an open meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday featuring a talk by Dr. Joshua Nething.

Nething is a urologist with Physicians Urology Group. He is a fellowship-trained physician in urologic oncology and robotic surgery.

The free meeting is at Stewart’s Caring Place, 2955 W. Market St., Suite R, in the rear of the building. Refreshments will be provided.

MEDINA

Citizens police academy

Police departments in the Medina area will offer the public an in-depth look at police work at a citizens police academy beginning later this month.

The Medina Community Citizens Police Academy will begin on Feb. 15 and continue each Wednesday for a total of 10 weeks. Residents of Medina city, Medina Township and Montville Township are welcome, and a background check is required for all those interested in attending.

The event will cover topics such as drug court, the booking process, community-oriented policing and decision-making scenarios. It is not intended to train participants as police officers.

STARK COUNTY

Road patrols to increase

CANTON: Stark County Sheriff George Maier says deputies will boost enforcement of speeding and impaired driving in February thanks to state grants.

More than 33 percent of fatal crashes in Stark County in 2015 involved alcohol or drugs.

The Sheriff’s Office received grants from the Ohio Department of Public Safety to pay for increased patrols.

Lake High to get updates

HARTVILLE: Lake High School is set to undergo a $33 million expansion and renovation project, the Canton Repository reported.

The work, which is scheduled to begin Monday, is expected to take more than two years.

ROOTSTOWN TOWNSHIP

Opiate epidemic event

ROOTSTOWN TWP.: Portage County health leaders will host a discussion from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday on the heroin and opioid epidemic in the community.

The free event will be held at the Northeast Ohio Medical University ballroom, 4209 State Route 44.

People who attend will receive a free naloxone overdose response kit through Project Dawn.

The awareness event is sponsored by the university, Portage County Health District, Mental Health & Recovery Board of Portage County and the student chapter of the College of Psychiatric & Neurologic Pharmacists.
