Good News — Feb. 6

The Rev. Jared Orndorff recently agreed to be duct taped to the wall at St. Joseph Parish School in Cuyahoga Falls and take a whipped cream pie in the face to raise money for Louisiana Disaster Relief, one of Akron-based HALO Foundation’s major campaigns. To raise funds, St. Joseph students donated money to receive a casual day, purchase duct tape strips and buy a chance to throw a pie. Students also donated to sign their names on a banner that will be given to the Flight 93 Memorial, another HALO Foundation campaign, when the eighth-grade students visit Washington D.C. in the spring. The efforts raised $1,100.

McDonald’s employee Misty Williams recently became the third restaurant team member from a franchised location in Northeast Ohio to earn her high school diploma through McDonald’s Archways to Opportunity program. Williams was honored with a graduation ceremony last month at the McDonald’s on Southeast Avenue in Tallmadge. Owner/Operators John and Carl Blickle attended the celebration along with Williams’ family and her McDonald’s crew members. The Archways to Opportunity program supports restaurant employees across the country in pursuing their educational goals, whether it’s earning their high school diploma, pursuing a college degree or learning English through the English Under the Arches program.

Students in the childhood development class at Firestone High School in Akron recently made 14 fleece tie blankets to donate to Akron Children’s Hospital’s Project Linus program. The program provides a warm blanket for comfort to children admitted to the hospital. The students worked in pairs to lay out, cut and tie each blanket. Students in the class complete a service learning project each semester.

The St. Sebastian Parish School Power of the Pen team had a strong showing at the recent district competition at the University of Mount Union. These eight students qualified for the regional competition on March 4 at Malone University: seventh-graders Noah Bates, Cassia Chivers, Sawyer Huckabee, Mia Khayyat and Leila Piscazzi; and eighth-graders Matthew Dennee, Brody Toth and Nicholas Zografakis. The team is coached by Maggi Blischak and junior high language arts teacher Sally Weakland.
