Police escort congressman
Congressman Tom McClintock, a Republican from California, on Saturday faced a rowdy crowd at a packed town hall meeting in Northern California, and had to be escorted by police as protesters followed him shouting “Shame on you!” McClintock was constantly interrupted and booed as he defended his party’s national agenda during the hourlong event at a theater, the Sacramento Bee reports. Hundreds of protesters stood outside chanting “Vote him out,” while those inside the theater held signs that read “Resist,” “Dump Tom McTrump,” and “Climate change is real.”

Fundraisers face pressure
Since President Donald Trump opened the ballroom at his Mar-a-Lago resort almost 12 years ago, it has been a popular rental for the American Red Cross, hospitals, researchers and other charities for fundraising galas where wealthy donors are wined and dined. But Trump’s election puts charities in an awkward position over choosing the resort — recently dubbed the president’s Winter White House — for events they may have planned more than a year in advance. Activists are pressuring charities such as the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Cleveland Clinic to move or cancel their galas this month.

Mold at Twain museum
Mold is threatening artifacts in the Mark Twain House & Museum. The Hartford Courant reports the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn author’s historic home is undergoing an extensive remediation effort. The mold was first discovered in 2015 and impacts at least 5,000 of the museum’s 16,000 artifacts, including some first editions of Twain’s works. The problem was blamed on a faulty HVAC system and leaky roof that have since been repaired. The roughly $1 million project has been largely paid for using tax money.

Man is ordered to celibacy
A judge has ordered a 19-year-old man not to have sex with anyone before he marries as part of his sentencing for statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl. Judge Randy Stoker sentenced Cody Duane Scott Herrera of Twin Falls to five to 15 years in prison, but he suspended the sentence for a one-year rider program. If the unmarried Herrera completes the program, he’ll be released on probation, which requires celibacy unless he weds. Stoker said the condition is needed because Herrera told presentence investigators he’s had 34 sexual partners.
