AKRON

Jr. NBA Skills Challenge

AKRON: The city of Akron’s Recreation Bureau will host the Jr. NBA Skills Challenge from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 18 at Hyre Community Learning Center, 2443 Wedgewood Drive. The free event, open to boys and girls 14 and younger, tests dribbling, shooting, rebounding and other basketball skills.

First-, second- and third-place winners in separate categories based on gender and age will advance to a regional competition in Indiana. Participants must have proof of age and fill out a registration and liability form.

Preregistration is available Monday through Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Summit Lake Community Center at 380 W. Crosier St. until Feb. 16. Last-minute entries may register the day of the event at Hyre school from 8 to 9 a.m.

Reflections on activist King

AKRON: The Akron branch of the NAACP is hosting “Reflections of Martin,” a free program celebrating Martin Luther King Jr., at 6 p.m. Feb. 16 at Miller South School for the Visual & Performing Arts, 1055 East Ave.

The program will feature reflections and readings of King, along with cultural expressions from the Miller South band, Akron-area students, poet Judith Lynn Lee and musical artist Xposyur.

A brief reception will follow the program.

AKRON: Ward 7 Councilman Donnie Kammer will hold “coffee with a councilman” Feb. 14 at the Firestone Park Community Center, 1480 Girard St., from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Feb. 14.

BARBERTON

Opiate addiction forum

BARBERTON: The city of Barberton will host a community meeting on opiate and heroin addiction at 6 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Salvation Army, 560 Wooster Road W.

City and state officials and local drug experts will speak about what is being done about the epidemic and what resources are available.

CLEVELAND

Drugs kill seven in two days

CLEVELAND: Cleveland police said 14 people suffered drug overdoses in two days with seven fatalities; one death happened Friday and six on Saturday.

A spokesman for the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office told cleveland.com an update is planned for Monday.

More than 500 people died from overdoses in the county last year, nearly all from the effects of opiates such as painkillers and heroin. More than 3,000 people died across Ohio, or more than eight each day.
