AKRON

1 dead, 3 injured in crash

AKRON: One person is dead and three are injured after an accident involving six cars on US 224 eastbound at the I-77 south ramp in Akron on Tuesday evening, according to a report from wkyc.com.

According to Akron fire officials, four cars were involved in the initial accident at 8:15 p.m., WKYC reported. The crash caused a second two-car accident, which resulted in three people being injured and one fatality due to a car fire.

Ohio State Highway Patrol, Akron Fire Department, Akron Police Department, and the Coventry Fire Department were on the scene. The cause of the accident is unknown.

Self-defense class

AKRON: A free women’s self-defense class will be offered Wednesday.

The course will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kenmore High School, 2140 13th St. S.W.

No registration is required. Participants will learn verbal techniques, kicks and slaps, how to get free from a chokehold and more. The monthly class is sponsored by Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh and University of Akron Police Lt. Chad Cunningham.

MEDINA

Woman dies from fire injuries

MEDINA: The mother of a disabled teen who was killed in an apartment complex explosion Feb. 9 has died from injuries she suffered in the fire, the Medina Gazette reported.

Sheila Drake, who along with her husband Robert tried to save their son Jacob Drake, 18, died Monday, the newspaper said. Robert Drake remains in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

Since the fire, authorities have discovered more than 60 gas leaks at the Medina Village Apartments.

Women’s history celebration

AKRON: The Federated Democratic Women of Summit County will host its annual celebration of Women’s History on March 4.

Fellowship begins at 11 a.m. at the Lawton Street Community Center, 1225 Lawton St. Deputy Mayor Dorothy O. Jackson will talk at 11:30. Following her presentation, lunch and the business meeting will begin at Noon. Cost is $15.

New members are welcome.

MASSILLON

Boy, 10, shot in shoulder

MASSILLON: Police said a 10-year-old boy was shot and wounded during a confrontation that was reported as an attempted robbery in Stark County.

Massillon police told the Independent that the boy was shot in the shoulder area Monday. The injury wasn’t considered life-threatening.

Police said the boy was with a juvenile relative when the shooting occurred. They reported that someone in a vehicle demanded something from them and fired a shot when they didn’t comply. Police Lt. Jason Saintenoy said officers are investigating whether there are similarities between that case and other attempted robberies in the area.
