Salute to American composers

This weekend’s Cleveland Orchestra concerts feature all-American composers, including the Symphony No. 3 by Aaron Copland (it includes the Fanfare for the Common Man, which you know, trust us) and Augusta Read Thomas’ Violin Concerto No. 3 (Juggler in Paradise). On Thursday and Saturday, the orchestra will also perform music by Leonard Bernstein from the film On the Waterfront. Friday’s shorter program starts at 7 p.m., the other two nights at 7:30. Tickets are $70-$149 at www.clevelandorchestra.com.

Nutritious gala at Tangier

Most fundraisers offer decadent food; not so for the Nutritious & Delicious Gala from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Tangier, 532 W. Market St., Akron. Cost is $35 and includes samples of healthful foods, two drink tickets and an engraved wine glass. You can vote for favorite dishes. Tickets can be purchased at www.eatrightakron.org or at the door. Proceeds go to the scholarship fund of the Greater Akron Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which benefits students at Kent State University and the University of Akron.

‘Spring’s Awakening’ at UA

The University of Akron Theatre Program presents Spring’s Awakening by Frank Wedekind through March 11. The play was written in 1891 but feels surprisingly relevant in its story of adolescents discovering their sexuality and the adults who hide from, lie to, pressure, and punish them for it. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday and March 11. Sandefur Theatre is in Guzzetta Hall, 157 University Ave., Akron; tickets are $12, $10 seniors, UA faculty, staff and alumni, $6 students. 330-972-7895, www.uakron.edu/dtaa/performances/.
