AKRON

Guard shot, killed at bar

AKRON: A security guard was shot and killed Saturday night outside the Game 7 Bar and Grille at 627 S. Arlington St., marking the second death at the establishment in two months.

Akron police say they responded to a call around 9 p.m. that a 33-year-old male was standing near the front, west-side door of the bar when he was shot in the hip.

The victim was transported to Summa Akron City Hospital, where he died of his injuries. His name is being withheld until his family is notified.

Police charged Thomas Dunn III, 19, of Longview Street and Anthony Cox, 21, of Edmeyer Court with obstructing justice. They were both booked into Summit County Jail, though police haven’t positively identified the shooting suspect or filed charges yet.

This is the second shooting death of the year at the bar. On Jan. 28, D’Cortez Taylor, 23, was found shot to death inside his vehicle in the bar’s parking lot.

Detectives haven’t identified any suspects in Taylor’s death and are still investigating the incident.

Judges lead OVI docket

AKRON: Judges Annalisa Stubbs Williams and Kathryn Michael have been appointed to preside over Akron Municipal Court’s OVI (operating a vehicle while under the influence) specialized docket.

The OVI court was started in 2007 as a collaborative effort between Akron Municipal Court; the Summit County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board; Oriana House; and numerous other Summit County treatment providers.

The program allows participants to receive intensive treatment to address drug and alcohol problems, as well as receive mental health and employment assistance.

The court isn’t a diversion program. It is a voluntary program aimed at second- and third-time OVI offenders.

Akron Municipal Court serves the cities of Akron and Fairlawn; Bath, Richfield and Springfield townships; the villages of Lakemore and Richfield; and part of Mogadore.
