CANTON: A Barberton man accused of firing shots at a Stark County deputy has been charged with felonious assault on a peace officer and illegal cultivation of marijuana.
Frederick M. Hill, 41, of Stratford Street was taken into custody without incident at his residence by Canton police, Stark County sheriff’s deputies, Barberton police and the U.S. Marshals Service, authorities said Thursday.
Canton Municipal Court has set bond at $2 million on the assault charge and $1 million on the marijuana charge. He is being held at the Stark County Jail.
Authorities told the Canton Repository that the deputy, who was in plain clothes and working with the Metro Narcotics Unit, was helping with a Canton drug investigation Wednesday night in the 2600 block of Cleveland Avenue Southwest.
When the deputy left the scene, a suspect followed in a car, pulled up alongside the deputy who was in an unmarked vehicle and fired two shots, the newspaper said. The deputy was not struck.
The investigation is continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact Canton police at 330-489-3144 or the Stark County Sheriff’s Office at 330-430-3800, or on the tip line at 330-451-3937. Anonymous tips can be sent by texting CANTON and the message to 847411.
