The University of Akron will have a day of service to honor two students who were killed in the past two years.
The Husein-Unternaher Service Event will start at 6:30 p.m. April 26 in the Student Union ballroom, where students will lead a dedication for members of UA who have died.
Directly after, volunteers will package more than 50,000 meals to be distributed around the world through the nonprofit organization Rise Against Hunger (previously known as StopHungerNow). The goal is to raise $14,500 before the event and get 400 volunteers to help the day of the event.
Last year, the university hosted a similar event for Zakareia “Zak” Husein, a 21-year-old UA student who was shot to death during a robbery at his family’s North Hill pizza shop in 2015.
This year’s event was named after him and Duncan Unternaher, a 23-year-old UA student who was stabbed to death by a roommate during a quarrel last year.
Students will have tables set up in the Student Union and in the College of Business Administration on campus in the weeks leading up to the event to collect donations and recruit volunteers.
Tax-deductible contributions can be made in memory of Unternaher, Husein or others at https://commerce.cashnet.com/orgwander.
Checks can be made to UA with a notation for the Husein-Unternhaer event and the name of the person you wish to remember. Mail checks to Husein-Unternaher c/o The Source, 303 E. Carroll St. Akron, OH 44325-4601.For more information, visit UARemembranceDay.weebly.com.
