AKRON

Police seek store robber

AKRON: The Akron Police Department is asking the public for help in identifying a gunman in the robbery of the Carnegie Pantry.

A man entered the business at 959 Carnegie Ave., where he pointed a handgun at the clerk and demanded the clerk empty the cash register and give him all of the store’s Newport 100 cigarettes.

MACEDONIA

Ramp closures from I-271

MACEDONIA: The ramp from Interstate 271 to southbound state Route 82 will be closed from 10 p.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Thursday for resurfacing, the Ohio Department of Transportation said.

Then, the ramp from I-271 northbound to state Route 8 southbound will be closed from 10 p.m. Thursday through 6 a.m. Friday for resurfacing, the state agency said.

NORTHEAST OHIO

Tentative deal for teachers

CLEVELAND: The Cleveland Metropolitan School district and the union representing teachers in one of Ohio’s largest districts have reached a tentative contract agreement that avoids a strike planned for this week.

The two sides said Tuesday that they reached the tentative agreement after a 21-hour bargaining session.

The school board and the Cleveland Teachers Union membership must approve the contract before it can become official. The two sides haven’t announced a schedule for voting. Terms of the deal weren’t released.

The union had planned to go on strike at 6 p.m. Thursday if a tentative agreement hadn’t been reached. School district and union negotiators have been working with a federal mediator.

Neither side had provided details on the issues that were in dispute.

New trailhead is open

STOW: Users of the popular Bike & Hike Trail managed by Summit Metro Parks have another place to begin and end their walks, runs or bike rides.

The park district has opened a new trailhead at 5090 Young Road in Stow, north of Call Road. A restroom will be constructed there before year’s end, and a drinking fountain is expected to be in service next spring. The lot has 29 parking spaces.

The 34-mile Bike & Hike Trail travels southeast from Sagamore Hills to Munroe Falls and Stow and now boasts 11 trailheads. It saw 252,000 users in 2015.

SUMMIT COUNTY

Board to name site for Pry

BARBERTON: The Summit County Developmental Disabilities Board plans to rename its property at 501 W. Hopocan Ave. in Barberton as the Russ Pry Barberton Center.

“Under Mr. Pry’s leadership, collaboration with community partners, innovation, diversity, equity and inclusion were values he lived by in serving the people of Summit County,” DD Superintendent John Trunk said in a prepared statement.

Pry, 58, who served as county executive, died last month of complications from colon cancer.

The agency said it will host a dedication center this fall.

Suicide victim’s kin sought

AKRON: The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office is seeking the next of kin for an Akron man who died this month.

Thomas J. Jensen, 53, died of suicide on Aug. 4. He was found alone in his home on West Crosier Street.

Jensen, a landlord, is said to have siblings in New York, possibly in Rochester or Buffalo. The medical examiner’s office has attempted to track them down, but could not connect with them.
