Beacon holiday hours
AKRON: The Beacon Journal Customer Service Call Center will be open Labor Day weekend 7-10 a.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Regular business hours of 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. will resume Tuesday.
The Public Service Counter inside the Beacon Journal, 44 E. Exchange St., will be closed Monday, Labor Day. Regular hours of 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. will resume Tuesday.
Fire delays school’s start
AKRON: Students at an Akron charter school got a few more unexpected days of summer break.
A fire occurred at Main Preparatory Academy at 1035 Clay St. in July, and officials had been working to repair the damage by Thursday’s scheduled first day of class. But during a building inspection on Wednesday, the fire marshal recommended delaying the opening until Tuesday.
Man loses shoes in chase
AKRON: Police arrested two men — including one who ran out of his shoes — after a short pursuit early Thursday morning on Virginia Avenue, according to Beacon Journal news partner newsnet5.com.
Police said they attempted a traffic stop on the car for reckless operation when the driver took off on two flat tires. The chase only lasted a minute or two when the driver and passenger jumped out and ran near the intersection of Virginia and Eller avenues.
Town hall meeting Tuesday
AKRON: Ward 10 City Councilman Zack Milkovich will hold a town hall meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Goodyear Branch Library, 60 Goodyear Blvd.
Representatives from various city departments will attend to address constituent questions and concerns.
Valle to hold office hours
AKRON: City Director of Neighborhood Assistance John Valle will host office hours from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Mason Park Community Center, 700 E. Exchange St., and from 1 to 2 p.m. Sept. 20 at Summit Lake Community Center, 380 W. Crosier St.

Calls impersonate officer
BATH TWP.: Someone pretending to be with the Summit County Sheriff’s department is calling people and demanding money, authorities say.
According to the Bath police department’s Facebook page: “there is a man contacting homeowners claiming to be a Sgt. Brian Miller with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. He is demanding money, claiming that they did not show up to jury duty and there is a warrant for their arrest.”
Bath police said the call is a scam and that the sheriff’s office will investigate.
COVENTRY TOWNSHIP
Woman, 33, dies in fire
COVENTRY TWP.: The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office, Summit County Sheriff’s Office and the Coventry Fire Department are investigating the fire death of Dana Lonteen, a 33-year-old woman from Portage Lakes Drive in Coventry Township.
On Tuesday at approximately 6:40 p.m., the Coventry Fire Department responded to an apartment fire on Portage Lakes Drive. When firefighters arrived at the scene they discovered heavy smoke coming from the apartment. The victim was discovered inside the apartment. The victim was transported to Summa Akron City Hospital where she later died from her injuries at 9:06 p.m. Wednesday.

Veterans funding
Fifteen agencies serving Ohio will share $14 million in federal money to help fight homelessness among veterans and their families, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown announced Thursday.
Community Support Services in Akron received $281,656, while Family & Community Services Inc. in Ravenna received $818,629.
The money was provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Supportive Services for Veteran Families program.
