NEW YORK

Agency investigates Weiner

A child welfare agency has begun an investigation into Democratic former New York congressman Anthony Weiner following another sexting scandal involving him. Weiner confirmed to the New York Times on Thursday he has received a letter from the city about the investigation. The New York Post on Sunday published photos it said Weiner had sent last year to a woman. It said one of the photos showed Weiner in his underpants lying on a bed with his 4-year-old son. Weiner is now separated from his wife, Huma Abedin, a top aide to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

MIDWAY ATOLL

Obama visits remote area

President Barack Obama on Thursday visited Midway Atoll, one of the most remote areas of the Pacific Ocean. Obama said protecting the atoll and its surroundings was critical to ensuring delicate ecosystems survive the throes of global warming. Obama is expanding the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, which includes Midway, to four times its current size. Obama said that 7,000 species live in the waters, and 1 in 4 are found nowhere else in the world.

Report documents abuse

Dozens of students in the 1970s and ’80s were manipulated and sexually abused by faculty and staff at the elite boarding school St. George’s, according to a report issued Thursday by an independent investigator. One in five girls who attended the school in the 1970s was sexually abused by the same athletic trainer, and others were subjected to abuse by nine other staff members from 1970 to 1989, the report found.

University makes amends

Georgetown University will give preference in admissions to the descendants of slaves owned by the Maryland Jesuits as part of its effort to atone for profiting from the sale of enslaved people, the president of the prominent Jesuit university announced Thursday.
