Kids, pets seized from home

Authorities removed 20 children and 18 dogs from a Southern California home that they say was uninhabitable. San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies also arrested five women at the home Thursday on suspicion of child cruelty. Two of the women also were suspected of being under the influence of a controlled substance. A sheriff’s statement says the home had no working electricity or gas, and there wasn’t enough food for the people living there. The statement also says that the dogs had no access to water and the carpet, walls and furniture were in disrepair. Authorities also say black mold was throughout the home. The children ranged in age from 2 months to 17 years old. Two dogs were found dead.

Threat phoned in to school

A man is accused of phoning in a threat to the new Sandy Hook Elementary School, which replaced the building that was demolished after 20 children and six educators were shot to death there in 2012. Newtown police arrested Pierre Beauvil, 28, of Stamford, on Friday on threatening, harassment and breach of peace charges. Police say someone called the school’s main office a couple weeks ago and asked when the first day of school was. After he was told it was Aug. 29, he made a threat against the school for that day. Beauvil was detained on $150,000 bail.
