AKRON

Beacon holiday hours

AKRON: The Beacon Journal Customer Service Call Center will be open 7 to 10 a.m. Monday. Regular business hours of 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. will resume on Tuesday.

The Public Service Counter inside the Beacon Journal will be closed Monday, Labor Day. Regular hours of 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. will resume Tuesday.

Trash pickup will be delayed

AKRON: City offices will be closed Monday in observance of the Labor Day holiday and there will be no trash pickup.

Garbage service will run on a one-day delay, along with recycling collection, for the remainder of the week.

The trash service will resume Tuesday through Saturday.

CAMPAIGN TRAIL

Fundraising event for Kurt

AKRON: Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro, Akron Mayor Daniel Horrigan and Summit County Fiscal Officer Kristen Scalise will host a fundraiser for county Clerk of Courts Sandra Kurt from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at Bricco, 1 W. Exchange St.

Adult volunteers needed

GREEN: Volunteers are needed to help build a new playground at Boettler Park.

Heritage Hill Playground, closed Aug. 17 for tear-down, will get a new playground Sept. 16 and 17 with volunteer assistance.

Adults who can give four to eight hours either day are needed. Volunteers can sign up via email at tangerine@cityofgreen.org.

Cardboard Boat Race

NEW FRANKLIN: A Cardboard Boat Race will be held 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Turkeyfoot Beach of the Portage Lakes, with all proceeds benefiting One of A Kind Pet Rescue, the largest no-kill animal shelter in Summit County.

Enter at 5031 Manchester Road.

The day will feature racing, onsite dog adoptions, the food vendor Sassy Dog and music provided by WONE (97.5 FM).

The race marks the start of the Movers for Mutts fundraising drive, organized by Two Men and a Truck. At the boat race and at many local businesses from Sept. 12 through Oct. 30, the drive will collect items for the animal shelter. The most requested items include used towels and blankets, creamy peanut butter, bleach and paper towels.

Auxiliary elects officers

AKRON: The Women’s Auxiliary Board of Summit County Children Services recently announced its new slate of officers for the group’s 2016-2017 program year.

Jen Thames of Cuyahoga Falls was elected as president. The other officers are Bettemae Ramsey of Akron, vice president; Bev VanderVeen of Akron, second vice president; Rosemary Federico of Akron, recording secretary; Annette Breit of Stow, corresponding secretary; and Becky Kuhns of Stow, treasurer.

The Women’s Auxiliary Board, which started in 1948, volunteers throughout the year to support Summit County Children Services projects, including the annual Holiday Toy Room that provides gifts for children in agency care.
