Derby Kids Day is Saturday
AKRON: The All-American Soap Box Derby is hosting its second annual Kids Day, presented by Move It Now, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Derby Downs, 789 Derby Downs Drive.
Each child will have a chance to try racing an official Soap Box Derby car down the track for free.
The event is open to youths ages 7 to 20 who can operate a derby car independently and are at least 46 inches tall. Cars and helmets will be provided.

Upcoming rummage sale
AKRON: The Women’s Auxiliary Board of Summit County Children Services is holding its annual rummage sale from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Fairlawn Community Center, 3486 S. Smith Road.
All rummage donations, like clothing, housewares, lawn and garden items, craft supplies or accessories will be accepted from 8:30 a.m. to noon Friday at the same location. Tax deduction receipts will be available to all donors.
The Women’s Board will also be offering coffee, tea, water, donuts and cookies for sale this year.
All proceeds from the rummage sale will benefit the children in the care of Summit County Children Services.

Pizza & Pages party
HUDSON: The Hudson Library is hosting its Pizza & Pages Teen Book Club at noon once a month until January.
Teens in seventh grade and up can visit the library for pizza and to talk about books on the following dates: Saturday, Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10.

Arrest in pellet gun assault
URBANA: Authorities say an Ohio college student has been arrested after a 4-year-old girl was injured by a pellet gun.
Police in Urbana in western Ohio say the girl was hit in the head Wednesday evening when someone fired a pellet gun from a moving car.
Urbana police say Chad King of Columbus, a student at Urbana University, was arrested Sunday. Preliminary charges faced by the 19-year-old include assault and obstructing official business.
King is scheduled for a hearing in Champaign Municipal Court Tuesday.
The girl’s mother says the injury looked worse than it was, but the pellet remains lodged in her daughter’s head.

Family center to hold event
BATH TWP.: Greenleaf Family Center — which provides counseling, education and support — will hold its Fund to Flourish fundraiser Sept. 15 at Crown Point Ecology Center in Bath Township.
At the event, it will present its annual Betty Dalton Award to George and Diane Sarkis, honoring them for their commitment to community service and philanthropy. Betty Dalton was a former Akron Public Schools Board of Education president.
George Sarkis is a partner at Roetzel & Andress law firm who has served on the board for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, Northern Ohio Golf Charities, Akron Children’s Hospital Foundation, Akron Community Foundation and Archbishop Hoban High School.
Diane Sarkis has been development director of the St. Hilary Parish Foundation since 2003, where she initiated the first foundation campaign, and has served as a fundraising consultant for Archbishop Hoban High’s capital campaign and as administrative director of Akron Golf Charities.
