Meeting date changed
AKRON: A town hall meeting originally set for Thursday night with Mayor Dan Horrigan will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 15 at Robinson Community Learning Center, 1156 Fourth Ave.
Attendees may ask questions and share their concerns. Assistant to the mayor Billy Soule facilitates the 75-minute sessions.
The final meeting will be 6 p.m. Oct. 6 at King Community Learning Center, 805 Memorial Parkway.
HIGHLAND SCHOOLS
Mattress sale fundraiser
GRANGER TWP.: The Highland High School speech and debate team is having its eighth annual mattress sale fundraiser 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 17 in the school cafeteria, 4150 Ridge Road.
More than 20 mattress sets will be on display, and mattress experts will be on hand to answer questions. The sets will range from economical to luxury lines, including gel-infused memory foam, latex and adjustable.
Mattresses are priced at up to 60 percent off retail and a $50 discount on delivery is available. Layaway and $50 referral coupons will also be available.
HUDSON
Farm tour, open house
HUDSON: As part of the Ohio History Connection’s Ohio Open Doors Project, Case-Barlow Farm will host an open house 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the historic farm, 1931 Barlow Road.
The event will feature comparisons of changes over the years at the homestead.
The first 25 visitors will receive an Ohio History keychain.
NORTH CANTON
City awards trash pickup
NORTH CANTON: After a recent bid process, the Kimble Co. was awarded the city contract as the lowest bidder for city trash and recycling services and will continue serving the city an additional three years.
The level of service will remain the same, but rates will change.
For curbside garbage pickup, curbside recyclables and the fall leaf recycling program, the rate will increase from $13.02 a month to $14.05 a month.
The garbage and backyard pickup option will now cost $16.95 a month instead of $15.52.
In the city’s 2016 community survey, about 94 percent of responding residents rated service by the Kimble Co. as good to excellent.
SUMMIT COUNTY
Deputy director named
AKRON: Darin Kearns has joined Summit County Children Services as the deputy director of fiscal services, replacing Gary Binns who retired from the agency in July after 17 years of service.
Kearns, of Shreve, began his career in the Ohio Department of Human Services, which later became known as Job and Family Services. In that agency, he worked as an auditor, an auditor-in-charge and an audit supervisor.
He later worked for Wayne County Job and Family Services as its business administrator, and then most recently served as the budget and finance administrator for Portage County Job and Family Services.
He has associate and bachelor’s degrees in business administration, with an emphasis in accounting, from Kent State University.
WADSWORTH
Grant to improve airport
WADSWORTH: City council on Tuesday accepted a $799,975 Federal Aviation Administration grant to improve the city’s airport.
Plans include improvements to the runways with the grant providing 90 percent of the total cost.
In addition, the council approved a contract with Shelley Co. for $807,639 to do the improvements.
The council also contracted for a study of the city’s downtown fire station to determine whether renovation of the building or new construction is needed.
Cost for the contract is $25,000 with the money supplied by the fire and EMS funds.
