Troop 81 out of St. Paul, Akron, had not produced an Eagle Scout rank in more than 30 years. Last month, the troop had a banquet to honor the young men who recently accomplished the rank. Honorees included Christoper Kuhn of Uniontown, Eagle Scout candidate-elect; Marcus Bender of Rootstown, Eagle Scout recipient; and Ryan Canan of Akron, Eagle Scout recipient. The Rev. Ralph Thomas, pastor emeritus, St. Paul Church, blessed the Eagle Scout recipient badges.
The Wayne County Commissioners recently led a time capsule initiative. Residents were able to visit the Verizon Wireless store on Burbank Road to record video messages onto Android phones that were sealed into two time capsules stored at the Wayne County Courthouse. One of the capsules has been stored in the northeast corner of the building, where it will remain for 150 years. The other is being stored inside the building for the next 50 years.
Four Kent State University graduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Psychological Sciences won the Sloboda and Bukoski Cup at the Society for Prevention Research’s annual conference. Liz Baker, Karly Cochran, Haylee DeLuca and Logan Stigall represented Kent State against five other teams from Arizona State University, Clemson University, Florida International University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and University of California, Irvine. Kent State Psychology Professor Manfred van Dulmen, Ph.D., who serves as the students’ primary graduate adviser, also served as the team’s mentor for the competition. The team also was assigned a prevention science mentor from Northwestern University, C. Hendricks Brown, Ph.D.
The fire safety video created by three Uniontown students won first place for their age division in the Paradigm Challenge. The competition challenged students 7 to 18 to use STEM skills plus kindness, creativity, and collaboration to generate new ideas to prevent injuries and fatalities from home fires. Jacob Shanahan, 12; Joey Shanahan, 10; and Julia Shanahan, 8; created the Fire Agents video, earning the three siblings $15,000 as first-place winners in their age division. The students received their check at a black-tie awards ceremony at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.
The University of Akron Women’s Committee two-year project culminated in the donation of raincoats and carrying bags with the University of Akron logo to the University of Akron Marching Band. In March, the Women’s Committee honored past president Judy Read for her commitment to the community and the university by setting up the Judith A. Read Community Leadership Award. In May, member Becky Considine opened her home to host a scholarship luncheon. Donations received support two scholarships given by the Women’s Committee each year. The 2016-17 Endowment Scholastic Scholarship recipient is Richard Auvil, of Canton, who is studying nutrition and dietetics. The 2016-17 International Ambassador Scholarship recipient is Dillon Thompson of Canton, who is studying corporate financial management with a minor in Chinese. Joining the Women’s Committee in 2015-16 were: Diane Geiger, Colleen Neiden, Stephanie “Pookie” Barnes, Adele Berardi, Madeline Bozzelli, Laura Burgler, Georgia Gardner, Carol Kline, Mary Beth Palmer and Sue Rasor-Greenhaigh.
Faith in Action Medina County Caregivers received a $4,000 grant from the Medina County Community Fund of the Akron Community Foundation to support its transportation program. The funds will be used to provide transportation to medical appointments for elderly and disabled of Medina County. In addition, Faith in Action Medina County also received a $2,500 grant from the Medina County Women’s Endowment Fund of the Akron Community Foundation to support the transportation program.
