AKRON

Store robbed at gunpoint

AKRON: A robber got away with an undisclosed amount of money after holding up the Circle K convenience store Wednesday afternoon at 901 Kenmore Blvd., Akron, police said.

The man, whom the clerk was unable to describe, showed the store clerk a gun and demanded money, police said. No one was injured.

The suspect drove off in a white Ford vehicle, possibly a Crown Victoria sedan, police said.

AKRON: A 19-year-old woman had non-life threatening injuries after accidentally being shot early Thursday morning at 1122 Ericcson Ave.

Akron police said the woman and three males were playing with a gun when it went off shortly after 2 a.m., hitting the woman in the chest.

The woman was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General. Police did not name her and said they are seeking to identify the three males who were with her at the time of the incident.

Ericcson Avenue runs between South Arlington Street and Rosemary Boulevard, just east of Akron Fulton International Airport.

Leapfrog fundraiser

AKRON: The Leapfrog Reading Program will host a fundraiser 5-9 p.m. Saturday at Musica, 51 E. Market St.

The event will include food, music and a raffle. Tickets are $15.

BARBERTON

Gospel group to perform

BARBERTON: The Dixie Melody Boys, a popular gospel quartet, will perform at 7 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Christian Healthcare Ministries Event Center, 800 Wooster Road.

The group has been nominated for a Grammy and has received several other fan award nominations from the Singing News Magazine.

Their hits include I’ll be Living That Way, I Won’t Compromise and Welcome Home. Their group leader, Ed O’Neal, was inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 2004.

CUYAHOGA FALLS: The Cuyahoga Falls Democratic Club will hold its monthly public meeting Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. on the second floor of the Giant Eagle Market District on State Road.

PORTAGE COUNTY

Suspect surrenders

A Ravenna man turned himself in Thursday morning after the Portage County sheriff’s office issued arrest warrants for him and an Akron man on suspicion of breaking into a Suffield Township barn earlier this month.

David W. Recklaw, 40, with a last known address of 6464 Newton Falls Road, surrendered at the Portage County Courthouse, Lt. Gregory A. Johnson in the sheriff’s office said.

Sheriffs are still looking for Troy S. Ash, 40, with a last known address of 62 Wymore Ave., Akron.

The two men are suspects in the Aug. 3 break-in at Moxie Stables in Suffield Township, Portage County, based on video footage, the sheriff’s office said in a release.

The men also will be questioned regarding other break-ins of barns and sheds in communities in Portage and Stark counties, Johnson said. Small lawn and garden equipment was taken in those thefts.

Anyone with information on the two men is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 330-296-5100.

UNIVERSITY OF AKRON

UA makes commercial

AKRON: The University of Akron has created a 30-second commercial with WKYC (Channel 3) to celebrate three former Zips who are competing in the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Former Zips All-Americans Shawn Barber, Clayton Murphy and Annika Roloff are competing in track-and-field events at the Olympics, which continue through Aug. 21.

The 30-second spot will air throughout the remainder of the games and at other times throughout the day.
