AKRON

Halloween charity ball

AKRON: Akron’s 13th Annual Halloween Charity Ball, presented by the law firm of Ashton, Wartko & Wilgus, will take place Oct. 28 from 8 p.m. to midnight at Tangier.

The event includes a $500 costume contest grand prize, open to anyone who registers by 9:30 p.m. at the event. The ball also includes a DJ dance party, open bar and food. Proceeds benefit the two local charities Akron Snow Angels and Young Black Professionals Coalition.

The event also includes a raffle featuring two Ohio State vs. Michigan football game tickets, a condo stay in Myrtle Beach and a $500 Visa gift card. Tickets to the ball and raffle are available at halloweencharityball.org.

Ward 8 meeting

AKRON: Councilwoman Marilyn Keith will host her Ward 8 meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Northwest Family Recreation Center, 1730 Shatto Ave.

Akron police will present the Hidden in Plain Sight program. Prior to the ward meeting, there will be the Northwest Block Watches meeting at 6 p.m.

Ward 6 meeting

AKRON: City Councilman Bob Hoch will host a Ward 6 meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Robert J. Otterman Ellet Community Center, 2449 Wedgewood Drive.

The Akron Fire Department will give CPR instructions and answer questions about CPR and medical emergencies. Akron police also will attend to provide community and city updates.

SUMMIT COUNTY

Student videos urge voting

AKRON: Dozens of videos produced by area middle school students urging adults to be informed voters will be on display at the Akron-Summit County Public Library downtown from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The students wrote and produced the videos as part of the Joy of Voting/ThisCityVotes project, which offered cash prizes. Winners will be announced next week and represented at the event.

The Jefferson Center and Beacon Journal secured the grant from Citizen University, and the Summit Education Initiative organized the competition and recruited schools.

Tax clinic will be offered

AKRON: Summit County Fiscal Officer Kristen Scalise, Mustard Seed Development Center, Fair Housing Contact Service Inc. and Community Legal Aid Services will host a free clinic for homeowners who have delinquent real estate taxes from 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 26 and Oct. 27 at City of Joy Life Enrichment Center, 610 W. Exchange St.

Homeowners can meet individually with representatives to discuss options and programs available to help them.

Red Kettle Kickoff planned

AKRON: Community volunteer and arts advocate Mary Ann Jackson will be honored at the Salvation Army of Summit County’s Community Medal Award Luncheon and Red Kettle Kickoff on Nov. 10.

The event will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tangier restaurant, 532 W. Market St., Akron. Individual tickets are $75. Tables of eight are $500. For reservations, call 330-434-7324 or 330-434-7110 by Oct. 31.

Jackson, along with Ann Amer Brennan, founded the Akron Area Arts Alliance in 1991. Jackson also is known for her signature parties that have raised significant funds for community organizations.

Jackson, who has served on many area boards, served as the first director of First Night Akron. Professionally, she was the Akron Symphony’s first marketing manager and the Ohio Ballet’s first development manager. She served as project administrator for David L. Brennan and as a marketing consultant for the Brennan, Manna & Diamond legal organization.

The annual luncheon serves as the formal launch of the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. This year, bell ringers will staff 49 locations from Nov. 11 through Christmas Eve (except Sundays).
