Can woolly bear foretell wild and woolly weather?

Do woolly bear caterpillars or abundant acorns really foretell the severity of the winter ahead? Find out at Folklore Forecasting, a talk at 7 p.m. at the Cuyahoga Falls Public Library, 2015 Third St. Jann Glove, a local interpretive naturalist, will speak about old-age adages and techniques once used to predict the weather, long before the invention of today’s high-tech equipment and complicated explanations. 330-928-2117.

Get ‘Goosebumps’ hearing about zombies at readings

It’s a very literary Monday in Northeast Ohio:

• Tickets may still remain for a talk by Max Brooks, author of zombie-themed books such as World War Z, at 7:30 p.m. at Kent State Stark’s Conference Center in Great Timken Hall. From WWI to WWZ: Learning from Our Mistakes, is the theme of the talk by Brooks, who’s the son of comedian, actor and director Mel Brooks and late Oscar-winning actress Anne Bancroft. • Goosebumps author R.L. Stine speaks at 7 p.m. at the Cuyahoga County Public Library Parma-Snow branch, 2121 Snow Road. The main room is full but additional seating has been added to the adjacent live stream room. Register at 216-661-4240.

25-cent dogs and coffee
at Stray Dog Cafe opening

The new Stray Dog Cafe downtown holds a grand opening celebration with 25-cent turkey dogs and 25-cent coffee. It’s in the Akron-Summit County Main Library, and hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. It offers both basic and dressed-up hot dogs familiar to those who’ve patronized the Stray Dog food cart, as well as soup and sandwiches. Check out Stray Dog’s Facebook page for more information.
