An early morning fire Sunday destroyed a Perry Township furniture store.

The fire at Dorsey’s Designer & Fine Wholesale Furniture at 4541 Tuscarawas St. W resulted in a total loss of the building and contents, said Mark Abbott, Perry Township’s deputy chief of fire prevention.

There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire is still being determined, Abbott said.

A call came in to the fire department at 12:18 a.m. Sunday by a neighboring business that reported flames coming out of the back of the building, Abbott said.

By the time crews arrived, “the back part of the building was involved pretty heavily,” he said.

It took three hours to extinguish the fire. Crews from the city of Canton, Canton Township, Plain Township, Jackson Township and Massillon assisted.

The business is relatively new, having only opened about six months ago, Abbott said. He was still trying to contact the business owner Monday morning. The building was a longtime bicycle shop before, he said.

Abbott said he did not yet have an estimate on the damage to the building and the contents of the showroom.

The fire started on the north side of the building. The back part of the building had wood floors upstairs, Abbott said.
