HUGHSON, Calif.

Deputy slain; suspect charged

A man suspected of shooting a sheriff’s deputy twice in the head in central California was arrested hours after the killing on Sunday when he tried to steal a woman’s purse, authorities said. Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Deputy Dennis Wallace was shot at point-blank range as he checked on a report of a suspicious van parked near a fishing access spot outside the city of Hughson, about 10 miles southeast of Modesto, county Sheriff Adam Christianson said. Wallace was alone when he came across the van Sunday morning. A dispatcher told him the vehicle was stolen, so he asked for backup. Another deputy found Wallace a short time later. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, the department said.

Celebrex is deemed safe

A new study gives some reassurance to arthritis sufferers who want pain relief but are worried about side effects. It finds that Celebrex, a drug similar to ones withdrawn 12 years ago for safety reasons, is no riskier for the heart than some other prescription pain pills that are much tougher on the stomach. “We do not want patients to suffer with pain and we need to know what is safe to give them,” said Dr. Steven Nissen, the Cleveland Clinic’s heart chief, who led the study. Fear that Celebrex would be worse than alternatives proved unfounded, and “on almost every endpoint it actually comes out the best.”

Anti-Trump rally draws 1,000

Immigrants, their advocates and others opposing a Donald Trump presidency continued to protest Sunday, speaking out against the president-elect’s support of deportation and other measures. Organizers in Manhattan carried signs in English and Spanish saying things like “Hate won’t make us great,” and chanted, “We are here to stay.” More than 1,000 people joined the march that started mid-afternoon and extended into the evening. It was the latest in days of demonstrations across the country, and even throughout the world. Protests were held Sunday in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia and more cities.

‘Doctor Strange’ stays No. 1

Marvel’s Doctor Strange led the North American box office for the second week with $43 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. That was an especially strong hold for the Benedict Cumberbatch-led superhero blockbuster. Trolls, the musical animated release from 20th Century Fox with Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake, also held well in its second week with $35.1 million. And Denis Villeneuve’s science-fiction thriller Arrival, starring Amy Adams, was the weekend’s top debut with a better-than-expected $24 million.
