CUYAHOGA FALLS

County District 2 meeting

CUYAHOGA FALLS: Summit County Councilman John Schmidt, District 2, will host public office hours Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Cuyahoga Falls Public Library, 2015 Third St. Schmidt will be available to answer questions and hear concerns from his constituents from Cuyahoga Falls, Munroe Falls and East Akron, Goodyear Heights and North Hill.

STARK COUNTY

Woman injured in hit-skip

CANTON: A Stark County Sheriff’s Office sergeant saved a woman who was lying in the road after being hit by a car Saturday night.

The sergeant was driving around 10:30 p.m. when he saw a 33-year-old woman lying in a prone position on U.S. 62 westbound near Rowland Avenue, said the sheriff’s office.

She was taken to Mercy Medical Center with unknown injuries.

The sheriff’s office is looking for a dark-colored SUV or van with heavy front-end damage and a broken windshield.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information can call the sheriff’s office at 330-430-3800 or the anonymous tip line at 330-451-3937.

TALLMADGE

City Council reviews year

TALLMADGE: Mayor David Kline opened Thursday’s City Council meeting by commending council members on their hard work during the year.

In 2016, the council passed 91 ordinances and 14 resolutions, he said before he presented a slideshow of the year’s development highlights, including the North Avenue mixed-use building, the residential Henderson subdivision, and other projects.

Also, Kline praised the 2017 budget, noting that it includes $2.6 million to cover such needs as police cruisers, street repair and stormwater. Director of Finance Mollie Gilbride reported that as of last month, the city’s income was up by 7 percent compared to last year around the same time.

In other news:

• The council was told that Cascades shopping plaza near Tallmadge Road was sold for $15.8 million to Benchmark Development Group, a New York-based investment company. Details on potential businesses in the plaza are still being confirmed.

• The council extended sympathy to Mary Lozowy for the Nov. 19 death of her husband, Michael Lozowy, 68. Kline described him as “one of the best firefighters I did work with.” According to his obituary, Lozowy retired from the Akron Fire Department after 31 years of service and from Tallmadge Fire Department after 26 years.

State news

Driver charged in fatality

CINCINNATI: The surviving driver in a fatal truck collision that closed a section of Interstate 275 has been charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Neil says Angeson Abreha, 31, of Denver was taken into custody Sunday after being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.

Authorities say Abreha was driving a semitrailer southbound on I-275 west of Cincinnati around 2 a.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve. His semi crossed the grass median and struck a northbound pickup truck driven by Jason Schaller, 35, of Cincinnati.

Schaller was pronounced dead at the scene. Jesse Crabtree, 33, of Cincinnati, a passenger in the pickup, was treated at an area hospital.

Extraordinary folks sought

COLUMBUS: The state’s Department of Aging is seeking nominations for the 2017 Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame.

The department says the honor often goes to “ordinary people who do extraordinary things.” Past inductees have included artists, educators, health care professionals, volunteers and more. They will be evaluated for contributions begun or continued after age 60.

Nominees must be at least 60 and either native-born Ohioans or residents for at least 10 years. Posthumous nominations are accepted.

The deadline is Jan. 31 for May 2017 induction. Information: www.aging.ohio.gov/news/halloffame/
