Group scholarship offered
CANTON: The Canton Audubon Society is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a college student planning an environmental career.
The Arnold W. Fritz Memorial Scholarship is open to students majoring in any of the environmental sciences and planning careers in fields including conservation, natural history, wildlife biology and zoology.
Students majoring in business or law will also be considered if they have a minor in one of those fields and are planning a career in environmental business or law.
The application deadline is March 1.

COPLEY TOWNSHIP
Winter festival canceled
COPLEY TWP.: No snow means no Winterfest. Copley trustees announced Wednesday that the community event, set for Jan. 28 at Copley Community Park, is being canceled because of warm weather.
The festival has included ice skating, sledding, snow golf, dog sledding and ice sculpture demonstrations.

Treasurer to resign in July
BATH TWP.: The school board accepted a resignation letter last week from district treasurer Dave Forrest.
Forrest, who has held the position for 17 years, will retire effective July 31.
Superintendent Matt Montgomery said the district will search for Forrest’s successor with input from staff, students and community members.

Parks offer 5K run training
AKRON: Have you ever wanted to get in shape to run a 5K and didn’t know where to start?
The Summit Metro Parks will begin its third annual “Couch to 5K” training series beginning 7 p.m., Feb. 16, with an information session at F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm, 1828 Smith Road.
Naturalist Elizabeth Kresse will describe what to expect out of the 10-week series in which participants meet Sunday mornings, starting March 5, for a group run and to discuss different running topics.
The information session is free. The training program costs $40 and includes admission to a Mother’s Day 5K race on May 14. Information: summitmetroparks.org or 330-865-8065.

Boy shot at school is stable
COLUMBUS: A student wounded in a school shooting is still listed in critical condition, but is stable.
Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus didn’t release any other information Saturday on 16-year-old Logan Cole.
Police have said he was a random victim of a 17-year-old senior who wielded a shotgun Friday morning at West Liberty High School.
The youth faces a preliminary charge of assault, with an initial hearing scheduled Monday.
