AKRON

Cops warn about break-ins

AKRON: Police are investigating a rash of car break-ins that occurred late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning in northwest Akron.

In each case, windows were smashed and belongings were taken.

At least five people filed reports, but police said there might be more victims.

Authorities advised people not to leave items inside vehicles in plain view and to park inside a garage or a well-lit area when possible.

Anyone with information about the break-ins is asked to call 330-375-2490.

Budget concerns sought

AKRON: The state biennial budget will be revealed in a few days. State Rep. Emilia Sykes, D-Akron, is asking her constituents in the 34th House District to share their concerns and suggestions regarding the direction of the state in a new online survey.

Citizens can access the survey at surveymonkey.com/r/RepSykesHD34.

The House Finance Committee will begin hearings on the state biennial budget next week.

Sykes, who serves as the House assistant minority whip, represents citizens in parts of Akron, Cuyahoga Falls and Bath Township.

First Tee offers ACT help

AKRON: The First Tee of Greater Akron is joining the Public Tutoring Initiative in offering American College Testing prep classes for ninth- and 10th-graders in Summit County.

Registration deadline is midnight Monday. The 90-minute classes begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday and will meet once a week for five weeks.

Cost is $150. Discounts and scholarships are available, said Frank Stams, First Tee executive director. Students will watch videos that teach the material, with questions answered during a live weekly webcast. Participants are encouraged to bring laptops or tablets, but First Tee will have portable devices available for those who don’t have them, Stams said.

Marijuana moratorium

FAIRLAWN: The City Council agreed this week to extend a moratorium on allowing any growing, processing or retail sale of medical marijuana in the community.

City leaders want to wait for the state to set regulations before enacting local rules.

The city approved a six-month moratorium in August. The new moratorium is for nine months.

KENT

Three charged in robberies

KENT: A group of teens was arrested Friday morning on charges of robbing people of cellphones and wallets.

Caleb Williams, 18, faces charges of robbery, felonious assault, marijuana trafficking and two counts of assault. Lorenze Wright, 18, was charged with three counts of assault. A 17-year-old also faces assault charges. All three are Kent residents.

According to police, the three robbed a group of people outside College Towers Apartments shortly before 1 a.m. before fleeing into an apartment building. Police located the suspects on the third floor of the building and placed them under arrest.

CLEVELAND

Mindfulness is event topic

CLEVELAND: Wooster teachers Ashley Tomassetti and Amber Cupples will be featured speakers along with Rep. Tim Ryan at an event kicking off a Northeast Ohio mindfulness initiative Monday. The event from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in Room 221 at East Professional Center, 1349 E. 79th St., Cleveland, is hosted by Inner Explorer, an education nonprofit focused on developing healthier, happier and more engaged students through 10 minutes a day of mindfulness, guided exercises to help develop attention, self-control and resilience.

Ryan has been involved in the mindfulness in education movement and has written a book, A Mindful Nation.
