See Oscar-nominated films before the Oscars

The Oscars are Sunday night. Impress the crowd at your watch party with insightful comments about Chile’s contender in the foreign language category, Neruda, starring Gael Garcia Bernal as a police inspector searching for celebrated poet and politician Pablo Neruda after he goes underground in 1948. It’s showing at the Nightlight in Akron at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday. Oscar-nominated short films are also on the bill, at 8:45 each night (documentaries on Tuesday and Wednesday, animated on Thursday). Chase away blues with Afro Blue at Blu Jazz+

Afro Blue, the vocal jazz ensemble formed in 2002 at Howard University, was a contender on the NBC show The Sing-Off and has performed at the Kennedy Center and with Bobby McFerrin, among many others. Learn about high-flying women in WWII
