Circus offers free event

COVENTRY TWP.: The public is invited to meet Hamid Circus performers at Tadmor Shrine Center, 3000 Krebs Drive, from 4 to 6 p.m. March 21.

The free event will feature an “elephant salad bar” for the Hamid elephants, in which children can watch the elephants dine from a 40-foot table filled with vegetables. Organizers caution against attendees wearing “good clothes” as the elephants sometimes toss food at each other.

Animal owners and trainers will provide information on the animals, and performers greeting the public include Johnny Rocket.

There will be beverages and snack foods available for purchase.

State news

Two killed in shooting

HOWLAND: Police say an ongoing dispute led to a shooting that left two people dead and three wounded.

Authorities in Howland near Youngstown said the shooting on Saturday wasn’t a random act of violence.

They said Nasser Hamad, 47, is the owner of the home where the shooting happened and has been charged with aggravated murder. It’s not clear whether he has an attorney.

Witnesses say they saw people fighting and running outside the house in a driveway before the shooting began.

Some of the victims were found in a van in the driveway.

Lawsuit targets airport

CLEVELAND: A Cleveland Hopkins Airport employee who federal authorities suspect was demoted in retaliation for raising concerns about runway snowplowing problems is seeking reinstatement and unspecified damages in a lawsuit against the city.

Cleveland.com reports Abdul-Malik Ali filed suit after the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration found that he was demoted for alerting federal authorities.

The complaint states that Ali was demoted from manager of field maintenance in February 2015 after he informed an FAA inspector that his crews had been understaffed during a recent snowstorm.

Ali’s attorney said his client’s constitutional rights were violated and the city broke Ohio criminal and civil laws barring intimidation.

A spokesman for Mayor Frank Jackson said he won’t address pending litigation.
