COPLEY TWP.: The township is looking for volunteers.

A meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. March 14 at township hall, 1540 S. Cleveland-Massillon Road, where participants will be matched with volunteer opportunities.

Among the available volunteer opportunities is an effort by the Copley Historical Society to recruit neighborhood ambassadors who can aid in communications with neighbors about local events.

CUYAHOGA VALLEY

Conservancy leader named

Countryside Conservancy, the area nonprofit that nurtures small-scale farming in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, has made its interim executive director its new leader.

Tracy Emrick has held the top post on an interim basis since last year.

She was named interim when founding executive director Darwin Kelsey stepped down in September. Kelsey died in December of complications from an illness.

Emrick has been operations director, core partnership manager and coordinator of the Countryside Initiative — the program that has brought farms to the Cuyahoga Valley — since joining the nonprofit in 2012.

Emrick’s “background in farming, marketing and her active membership in farm and agribusiness organizations serves this role well,” said Ernie Estep, the nonprofit’s board chairman.

HUDSON

Snowplow severs gas line

HUDSON: Four buildings near Hudson and Corporate drives were evacuated about 12:30 p.m. Friday after a snowplow driver accidentally hit and severed a natural gas line on Summa Health property.

No one was injured, but there were tense moments until the gas was turned off, said Jody Roberts, Hudson’s spokeswoman.

The evacuations included Primrose School, a day care and preschool center, the Omni building, Summa’s Health Wellness Center and Akron Children’s Hospital’s urgent care center.

People were permitted back into the buildings Friday afternoon, Roberts said. Summa’s Wellness Center and Akron Children’s remained closed because they had no heat.

Dominion East Ohio Gas employees were working to fix the gas line, but it was unclear when gas would be restored.
