Work postponed on I-77

AKRON: The Ohio Department of Transportation has postponed highway work on Interstate 77 in Akron this weekend because of expected poor weather.

The work will be delayed one week, the state agency said.

The latest incident occurred at 496 S. Canton Road about 11:30 a.m. Thursday. A clerk told police a man came into the business and demanded money from the cash drawers and the business safe.

According to police, the suspect — wearing a black mask, black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and black Reebok shoes with red lettering — fled out a rear door and jumped into a bright blue Ford Fusion.

Investigators believe the same man also robbed the Check Into Cash at 2174 Romig Road on April 22.

Police described the robber as a light-skinned black or Hispanic man, 5-10 to 6 feet tall, 170 to 200 pounds.

SUMMIT COUNTY

Jail stay explained

Ever wonder what it’d be like to be booked into the Summit County Jail? Wonder no more.

The sheriff’s office dedicated a story in the May issue of the Summit County Shield to explaining what happens and posted more than 60 photos on its Facebook page chronicling the process. According to the article, an average of 50 people arrive each day at the corrections facility on East Crosier Street in Akron.

“The shock of being locked up alone in a jail cell can be a very emotional experience for most people,” the article says. “Some react violently; angry at themselves or the system, while others are saddened or simply numbed by this … new environment. Then there are those who are arrested so often that incarceration is commonplace, and the Summit County Jail is all too familiar to them.”

STARK COUNTY

Vehicle kills pedestrian

PERRY TWP.: A 76-year-old man who was trying to walk across Whipple Avenue died after being hit by a car Thursday night.

Charles Greenwalt of Perry Township was struck at 9:21 p.m. by a southbound black 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo while he crossed the road just north of 14th Street, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

Greenwalt was treated at the scene by Canton Township Fire and EMS, but later was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital.

There was no crosswalk or intersection in the area where he was struck and alcohol is believed to be a factor involving the pedestrian, the patrol said.

The car was driven by Christopher Barnhouse, 24, of Canton.

The crash remains under investigation.
