NEW YORK

Deaths mar West Indian Day

Revelers in costumes danced as the sounds of steel drums filled the air Monday at the city’s annual West Indian Day Parade, but despite an expanded police presence violence again marred the event, with two people shot to death at pre-dawn festivities. Tyreke Borel, 17, was shot in the chest at around 3:50 a.m. in Brooklyn during J’ouvert, a celebration that fills the streets with music hours before the parade steps off. Police said a 72-year-old woman was shot in the arm and was hospitalized in stable condition. Soon after, a 22-year-old woman, Tiarah Poyau, was shot in the head just a block away, police said. Borel and Poyau died, and police said they were investigating.

OAK BLUFFS, MASS.

Man breaks in, paints dog

Police say a man broke into a home on Martha’s Vineyard and painted the resident’s dog purple. The Cape Cod Times reports that Felix Reagan is charged with breaking and entering with the intent to commit a felony, cruelty to animals and larceny of a motor vehicle. Police responded to an Oak Bluffs neighborhood Saturday afternoon for a report that a man had stolen a vehicle, crashed it and then ran away. Soon after, officers were called to a nearby home where the resident reported someone had forced in a window, stolen items and painted their dog purple. Police say officers located Reagan, who had purple paint on his pants.

GM settles ignition cases

General Motors Co. has settled two federal court cases related to its defective ignition switches, but its legal troubles stemming from the switches are far from over. GM settled the cases for an undisclosed amount, plaintiffs’ attorney Bob Hilliard said Monday. In both cases, the plaintiffs said they sustained serious injuries when the air bags didn’t deploy. The cases are among several so-called bellwether trials that are testing the legal boundaries of hundreds of claims against GM.

LAUDERHILL, FLA.

Three people found dead

Police are investigating the deaths of three people found slain inside a South Florida house Monday. Lauderhill Lt. Greg Solowsky said it was unclear how long the bodies had been in the home. Police did not release the victims’ names, ages or genders. Solowsky says police have not determined how many suspects are involved or the motive for “this heinous act.”
