AKRON

Town hall meeting

AKRON: Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan will host the fourth meeting in his town hall series at 6 p.m. Thursday at Rimer Community Learning Center, 2370 Manchester Road.

He will hear questions and concerns from residents.

There are two town hall meetings, also scheduled for 6 p.m., planned after this one:

• Sept. 8 at Robinson Community Learning Center, 1156 Fourth Ave.

• Oct. 6 at King Community Learning Center, 805 Memorial Parkway.

CUYAHOGA FALLS

Downtown future on agenda

CUYAHOGA FALLS: The city will host an informational meeting to discuss the future of downtown and how its past can help its future.

Learn about the National Register of Historic Places, how downtown may be eligible, and what it means for property owners in the district.

The meeting will be conducted by the Cuyahoga Falls Design and Historic Review Board at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Natatorium, 2345 Fourth St.

Extra hours for water park

CUYAHOGA FALLS: The city-owned Water Works Family Aquatic Center will be closed Aug. 17-19, then reopen for a bonus weekend Aug. 20-21 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. before closing for the season.

The facility will reopen Memorial Day weekend in 2017. Season passes for 2017 can be purchased at a preseason rate beginning Dec. 1.

LaRose to hold office hours

State Sen. Frank LaRose, R-Hudson, will welcome residents to his district office hours Saturday. LaRose represents Wayne and portions of Summit and Stark counties.

No appointment is necessary. In an effort to make himself accessible to everyone, LaRose holds office hours once a month at several locations.

This Saturday’s hours are:

• Stow: 9 to 10 a.m. at Stow City Hall, 3760 Darrow Road

• Orrville: 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Orville Public Library, 230 N. Main St.

• Canal Fulton: 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., Canal Fulton City Hall, 155 E. Market St.

PENINSULA

Historic work to be honored

PENINSULA: The city of Peninsula is celebrating its Remembrance Day Saturday by remembering its carpenters with guided tours and other activities between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Markers will be placed at homes built by carpenters or where they lived the past 200 years, and residents of the city dressed in period costume will guide visitors on tours of six public buildings and two private gardens.

Craftsmen will be at Terry Lumber & Supply to discuss their craft, offer demonstrations and share stories.

The Peninsula Library and Historical Society will display classic carpenter hand tools.

Lunch will be available for sale at the United Methodist Church.

Peninsula was a center for lumbering, milling, manufacturing and construction prior to the Civil War.

STARK COUNTY

Veterans park gets gift

PLAIN TWP.: Trustees accepted Tuesday a $10,000 donation from the Plain Township Rotary toward a proposed Veterans Memorial at Veterans Memorial Park on Schneider Road Northeast.

The memorial is expected to be completed in time for dedication on Veterans Day on Nov. 11.

Trustees also authorized a $19,464,734 2017 alternative tax budget to be presented to the Stark County auditor.

In addition, the board hired Ryan Bagley as soccer supervisor at Diamond Park. He will be paid $8.10 per hour.

They also approved the purchase of fertilizer and seed for the park at a total cost of $4,745.
