Zoo feted for green efforts
AKRON: The Akron Zoo has snagged a top award for its business practices that are sensitive to the environment.
The award from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is dubbed Green Award Top Honor.
“This award recognizes the significant achievements we have made in forging a more sustainable future for our organization,” Akron Zoo President and CEO Douglas M. Piekarz said in a news release.
The zoo said its sustainability efforts include building the first LEED building at a zoo east of the Rockies.
LEED is a standard of environmental sustainability for buildings.
The zoo said other green achievements include establishing the first 4-star “green certified restaurant” at any zoo in the United States, an 80 percent reduction in water use since 2009 and the diversion of millions of pounds of organic waste from landfills since 2013.

Costume swap for kids
BARBERTON: Have your kids outgrown their Halloween costumes? Join the Barberton Public Library 2-3 p.m. Oct. 8 for a costume swap for all ages.
Bring a gently used costume and exchange it for another at the library, 602 W. Park Ave. You must bring a costume to participate in the swap, and the costumes must be clean and in good condition. Any donated makeup must be sealed.
The library will also accept costume donations through Oct. 8.

Have coffee with a judge
TALLMADGE: Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Todd McKenney, who is running for re-election in November, will have a “Coffee with the Judge” event Thursday .
The event will be from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Dunkin’ Donuts, 196 Tallmadge Circle. Those who attend can enjoy coffee and doughnuts while visiting with McKenney.

PORTAGE COUNTY
Robbery suspect found
RAVENNA: The Portage County Sheriff’s Office thanked the public for helping to find a man accused of robbing three people at gunpoint early Tuesday morning.
Elijah K. Sanders, 23, has been charged with three counts of aggravated robbery and will be arraigned Wednesday at the Ravenna Courthouse.
Portage County Sheriff David W. Doak said Sanders was taken into custody without incident after the department received information about his possible location. Sanders is being held at the Portage County Jail without bond.
The robbery victims reported Sanders was invited into a Ravenna Township home in the 3800 block of Summit Road about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. He’s accused of producing a handgun once inside and robbing three people inside. He fled the home on foot, police said.
No one was harmed in the incident.
RICHFIELD
Vandals leave vulgar ‘art’
RICHFIELD: Police are asking the public’s help to identify vandals who spray-painted crude drawings of stick figures in sexual positions on cars, driveways and houses over the weekend.
All the vandalism was reported in the Woods Development at the intersection of Wheatley and Revere roads. Residents discovered the drawings on Saturday morning.
Richfield Lt. Joe Davis said he suspects it was the work of teenagers, possibly ones who live in or near the development.
“Fortunately a lot of the paint was able to be washed off,” he said.
Davis said police took photos of the damage, but declined to publish them on the department’s Facebook page because they’re vulgar.
